The flow of charge IS THE VITALITY OF UNIVERSE. It's not just something that happens on the way to a perceived natural state of neutral. You cannot study the universe or anything in it with a premise that amounts to throwing the baby out with the bath water. The constantly separating negative and positive charges provide all the opportunities for life and cosmic systems alike to form around the dynamics of moving charge. This could be from a simple proton gradient with early life, to lightning, ionised plasma, the heliosphere or the immense galactic jet discharges emanating from galactic jets at the heart of galaxies.
Another misconception is that for all this to be at play you need a charge separated universe fundamentally by virtue of a net positive or net negative charge. Not so. The dynamics of charge separation exist in systems everywhere in the universe and on every scale that we have managed to observe. It doesn't matter whether it is the stellar scale solar wind or Herbig Harrow objects or galactic scale cosmic jets or beyond. charge separation happens on scales so vast it is difficult for us to have means of relating to it. The figures would be as alien to us as a billion light years is in terms of distance relatability.

The reason these mechanisms manifest at every order of magnitude is because they are a fundamentally scalable property of matter in fractal or compounding way. The fate of cosmic matter is not restricted to such flights of fancy as black holes, but physically real, dynamic and connected objects like the plasma magnetic entities called plasmoids in the ionised plasma systems in intergalactic space or the double layers and Birkeland Currents that are all well-established plasma physics phenomena. These properties are well established in lab experiments, focus fusion reactors, plasma physics from Tokomaks, power and weapons manufacture.
When translated to electrical engineering the inventions or equations stemming from Gauss, Faraday, Maxwell and Tesla are consistent, precise and reproducible to unbelievable precision. The most tested and widely engineered in all of science and in the history of humankind. They are used in industries, homes, to power society, to set foundations for electronics and computing. They are reproducible in labs and observable wherever we wish to do so. These are not mathematically constructed contrivances that only exist in pieces of paper, on Nova documentaries or in the CGI "photographs" from project Event Horizon, or the imagination of the far-out folk at the LIGO interferometer.

In fact, all the facilities I have just mentioned are powered by electricity! So is the device you are reading these very words on. So too are the neurons connecting your eye to your brain (which by the way is also electrical) in order for you to turn those word into understanding.
The purpose of this post is to provide a synopsis of a universe that is fundamentally based on charge separation and even to suggest that this very important element of reality is what allows all life, environments, climate, light, star systems, galaxies and the cosmic web of the universe itself to exist. Charge neutrality is never a state that is reached as a goal. It is itself a stage between stages and it appears that we walk an equilibrium between becoming more charge separated and managing to neutralise some of that potential if a critical threshold is reached. That potential (voltage) is the potential that life was given to realise it's systems electrically and then to biologically to exploit this.
The cellular membranes of Mitochondria and Chloroplasts are charge seperated and this determines the very essence of life itself. Other critical aspects in the circle of life such as bees pollinating flowers are now known to be governed by an interaction excited by the role of electrical potential. Insect swarms too are fundamentally electrical affairs and very few people understand to what extent this is so. Swarms generate more volts per meter than thunderstorms! Nature is almost NEVER charge neutral.

The role of charge separation in Geology has only recently been explored, and we only notice it when regions of vastly different charge difference are exposed suddenly to each other, such as volcanic eruptions, where the charge equalization often results in spectacular lightning storms.Read more about it here.
Weather and the ionosphere
The charge separation between the suns electrical environment and our ionosphere extends beyond the auroras. It plays a role in the weather itself. It is outdated to assume lightning is a charge equalization resulting from potential created by water molecules in clouds "rubbing against each other".  |

Planets such as Venus have no water clouds and lightning many times stronger than here on earth. The charge difference is now known to already exist, and the storm clouds are now understood more as an effect of, rather than cause of charge separation.
